[ARCHIVED] Protect Your Pipes This Winter!

Some Wilmington Water Tips to Help You Avoid Costly Repairs

As winter approaches, Wilmington Water wants to provide you with a few proactive steps you can take to protect your indoor plumbing and outdoor irrigation systems. By using these preventive measures before and during cold weather, you can avoid costly burst or leaking pipes:

Know How to Turn Off Your Main Shut-off Valve

People often forget where their main water shut-off valve is. Knowing where it is and how to turn it off can help you avoid significant damage if a pipe ever bursts. Familiarize yourself with the location of your water shut-off valve and how to turn it off whenever anything goes wrong.

Disconnect & Drain Hoses

Disconnect all your garden hoses from outdoor faucets. Make sure your hoses are emptied and stored in a dry place to prevent freezing and cracking.

Insulate Outdoor Faucets, Exposed Pipes, & Basement Water Meters

Use insulated covers for outdoor faucets to protect them from freezing temperatures. Consider wrapping exposed pipes with inexpensive insulation, especially those in unheated areas like basements or attics. If your water meter is located in an uninsulated basement, consider wrapping it in insulation to help avoid it freezing. Customers whose meters freeze due to cold temperatures inside the home will be charged for the cost of a new meter.

Winterize Sprinkler Systems

If you have an irrigation system, consider having it professionally winterized. If you want to winterize your system yourself, at least turn off the water supply to your sprinkler system and drain any remaining water. If you wish to blow out your lines like a professional using an air compressor, there are several how-to videos online.  Make sure you use the correct method for your system.

Check for Leaks

Inspect your plumbing for any leaks before winter weather sets in.  Addressing any leaks you find now will save you from costlier repairs later.

Keep Indoor Temperatures Steady

Maintain a consistent temperature in your home, especially if you will be away. This helps prevent pipes from freezing.

Prepare for Extreme Weather

Stay informed about local weather forecasts and be prepared for severe cold spells. This includes having supplies on hand, like blankets and an emergency supply of bottled water.

By taking these simple steps, you can protect your home’s plumbing and ensure a hassle-free winter season.  If you have questions or need assistance, feel free to Contact Us.
