[ARCHIVED] City Issues Drinking Water Update About Taste, Odor Issue

Drinking Water Update – City of Wilmington

The City is currently experiencing a seasonal taste and odor issue with its drinking water.  When algae in our source water increases, an earthy taste and smell can be created.

Our water is safe to drink because our water treatment plants effectively remove algae, and our monitoring programs ensure that federal and state water quality standards are always met.

Some of the taste- and odor-causing substances may remain after our treatment.  They are harmless but can continue to cause taste and odor issues because the human nose is especially sensitive to the smell.

One step the City’s customers can take to help reduce taste and odor issues is to pour their water into a pitcher and refrigerate it overnight.

While we continue to address the issue, it will likely remain until weather conditions reduce the algae in our source water.  We apologize for the inconvenience.
