Taste & Odor

Wilmington's drinking water occasionally experiences temporary taste and odor issues, often due to seasonal algal growth in the source water. While these issues can cause an earthy taste or smell, the water remains safe to drink, as the City's treatment processes effectively removes the algae. Wilmington Water is continually working on long-term solutions to minimize these aesthetic concerns.

In 2024 The City of Wilmington adopted LG Sonic technology to enhance water quality and address seasonal taste and odor issues in drinking water caused by algal growth. This innovative, eco-friendly solution uses ultrasonic sound waves to control algae without chemicals, offering a sustainable alternative to previous treatments. The LG Sonic system improves water taste and odor and also reduces maintenance costs. Wilmington remains committed to providing high-quality water by using advanced, real-time monitoring systems to ensure compliance with all federal and state standards.
